This pair of larger-than life statues were decorations at Acropolis NOW, a themed 2010 New Year's Eve party in Minneapolis, where the lines between Greek mythology and cyberspace fade. These two rulers of the sea and their ocean waves stood approximately 11' tall, and had UV-reactive armor and weapons styled after the lightsuits in TRON Legacy.
Some of the photos above show the statues during various phases of construction, without coatings or paint. Under natural light, you can see the detail of the lightsuits, which where modified to reveal one breast on each figure, true to form with many ancient Greek statues.
Both statues were fashioned from 90% re-purposed materials, most of which was giant styrofoam set pieces from The Guthrie Theater's production of Master Butchers Singing Club. The pedestals are constructed out of lumber, some of which was also recycled from the same theater set.
Finished, each statue weighed only about 40lbs, not including their pedestals.
Thanks to recycling, this project took 120 hours over 14 days to complete, and cost less than $300 in new materials.
Over 280 attendees at Acropolis NOW ushered-in 2011 with many other attractions, including a DJ booth inside a huge TRON Recognizer, a blacklight Greek gods mural, a 5 watt home-built laser, the Elysian Fields Lounge, a wide array of home-brewed beers, ciders, and wines, along with live entertainment by Savage Aural Hotbed, Dissociate, the Binary Devis, and DJs Noise, O2, Nitrogen, dv8, Fenris, and Captain Farrell.
