CONvergence Main Stage CAD model

Before I even begin a production design, I spend lots of time studying the environment where that design will live. Often times, you'll see me scurrying about a production location with a tape measure and a notebook, taking dimensions of every last detail. Then, I reproduce that environment in a 3D CAD modeling program.

This is one of the simpler examples. Each year at CONvergence the hotel ballroom is sectioned-off with air walls, temporary staging and lighting truss are set up, and pipe and drape mask-off the backstage areas. During the other 51 weeks of the year, the planning committee needs some kind of reference as to how all of this equipment is set up and placed. That's where this model comes in.

One customized addition to the Main Stage is the proscenium portal, which is decorated with two giant art boards of the CONvergence mascot, Connie. The backside of these book-flats also serve as light ladders.

All elements of this model are precise to within 1/16".
