Everybody needs a website, even plumbers. The direction I got for this one was "something real simple" and "nothing fancy" paired with "I don't wanna spend a lot of money". Normally, I wouldn't bid on a project like that, but when the client is your own brother, it's tough to say no!
It may look like a simple site, but when the specs called for a contact form, and today's weather, I knew this was going to end up as a dynamic site. And knowing my brother, there was bound to be a fair amount of scope-creep in this project, so I needed a platform that was scalable and modular. Of course, Drupal immediately came to mind.
My brother's business had no logo, no brand colors, and no copy. His only motivation for the site was to get more clients, and he didn't really care how that was done. His plumbing business takes him to some big construction sites, so he has a large, black, enclosed trailer for his gear. He also had a big red 4x4 truck. This image alone gave me the black and red brand colors, and his identity took shape from there. Later, he had this made into business cards, jackets, sweatshirts, and graphics for his truck and trailer. Everything looks sharp!
A simple site, with a simple message, for a simple business still needs to be functional and visible. I was able to do some SEO work, and this site quickly made it's way up the ranks. Thanks to Drupal, some sharp photography, and a nice liquid-layout, this site is one of my best little success stories.
Today, my brother's business is thriving. Many of his clients find him online, and often remark that they chose his business over competitors because the site looked more professional. I wish all of my clients this kind of good fortune.
