I was commissioned by CONvergence, the Midwest's largest science-fiction and fantasy convention, to build a statue of their mascot "Connie", a superhero robot. Connie is the brainchild of comics illustrator Christopher Jones, who has drawn hundreds, if not thousands, of variations of this character. This sculpture, however, was the first time she had been seen in three dimensions.
The feminine design meant lots of complex curves which meet up with sharp lines and planes. The "ears" were particularly difficult, since they wrapped around the back of the head and met up in a recognizable fashion. The spine had to be a steel armature, which was both tubular and bent, making the geometry extremely complex. The telescoping limbs provided another challenge, since the layered leaves had to appear as though they fit inside one another. Needless to say, it was very complicated to bring this character up from printed media, while maintaining the laws of physics!
Connie has a marble finish, and stands over 7 feet tall.
