Portable Tent Platform System

I designed and built this platform system for comfortable, long-term camping and compact storage. I primarily used it for 8 weeks a year while working as an entertainer at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival.

Designed to match the exact footprint of my tent, the hinged steel frame folds inside of itself in one direction, while the decking folds in the opposite direction for maximum strength. The frame includes 12 receptacles for standard 2x4 legs which can be cut to match any grade.

I typically put a layer of carpeting over the deployed deck for comfort, and to protect the bottom of the tent from the sharp edges of the platform.

A simple PVC lanyard rail and shock cords keeps the tent taught, but allows it to flex in high winds. Combined with the shape of the dome tent, this shelter has never collapsed, even in severe weather.

The treated wood deck makes it easy to enter and exit the tent, especially in wet or muddy conditions.

I liked the size of the tent, as it was perfect for backpacking or canoe trips. During my extended stays at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, it was roomy enough for a full-size air mattress and 6 plastic tote bins. I kept the tent maintained by the professionals at Midwest Mountaineering, and it served me well for many years.
