I began doing graphics and web design in 1995. Like all ambitious designers, I taught myself HTML. During that time, I worked as a freelancer, eventually moving into the corporate world. I put myself through night school to learn object oriented programming using Microsoft technologies. Later I picked up Java, Perl, PHP, and many other languages. Today, I apply my design background and programming skills to theming and front-end development using the Drupal Content Management System.
This is a collection of web projects I've worked on, web development events I've been a part of, and my personal thoughts on how the web is evolving.
Building and launching a high-traffic website is no easy feat for a development team, let alone one guy working solo! I spent the better part of a year setting up a host, building dozens of content types, converting a very tough design into a workable front-end, and integrating complex workflows. Fortunately, this project was kept manageable thanks to Drupal, and ongoing support from the professionals at Acquia. Read more »
I was commissioned by film director Ryan Wood to build this prank website to coincide with the premiere of his film Fear of Girls 3, the latest installment of short films about the travails of being a role-playing gamer. Read more »
Everybody needs a website, even plumbers. The direction I got for this one was "something real simple" and "nothing fancy" paired with "I don't wanna spend a lot of money". Normally, I wouldn't bid on a project like that, but when the client is your own brother, it's tough to say no! Read more »
Back in 2006, this was the first web site I built solo using a CMS, and I went with Drupal 4.7. I can't believe how much Drupal has improved since then! I had done experimentation with Joomla and WordPress, but found Drupal to be the best choice in terms of flexibility and themeing.
The Dregs are a popular music comedy act in Minnesota, with thousands of fans. Naturally, this site needed to accommodate some significant traffic and perform well. Drupal did not disappoint! Read more »
I did both the branding and the site design for this company. They were exclusively a Microsoft shop, so this site was built in ASP.net... blecchhh! Five years later, I'm actually surprised that they still use this design today.
This is a one-time promotional website done for a New Year's Eve event. It was largely a static site, but drew lots of attention (which was the point, I guess). Apart from the actual site design, I also did the artwork for the main image on the home page.
After my work on projects at Digital River, I found a job doing web design for a company which catered exclusively to the real estate industry. Each site had a custom front-end, but Home Marketing Network's custom-built CMS made them all function very much the same. Read more »
Post 9/11, my first corporate web development job was working for Digital River. I really loved this company. They treated me well, utilized all of my talents, and had an amazing corporate culture. My first project there was building the front-end HTML interface for Boost Mobile's website. I cannot take credit for the design, only the implementation. Read more »
At one point I was asked to work on a site design for a contemporary church for singles and 20-somethings. They already had an identity system and plenty of collateral, so the design came naturally. Read more »
When I moved from Deluxe Corporation to their sister company, eFunds, I was assigned to "beautify" and "jazz up" their existing websites and applications. Unfortunately, I was still stuck with their gold, purple, and fluorescent color palette. *sigh* Read more »
